What is the link between Cancer and common chemicals

Although no decision has been made, many studies point to environmental factors contributing to the increase of cases of breast cancer. As more research focuses on the causes of the disease, cannot ignore the importance of the analysis of the role of environmental factors. The incidence of breast cancer is increasing, and no significant increase of genetic predisposition, we begin to examine more closely the products we use on our bodies and in our homes, what we consume and how each of them is packed.

A possible contributors which has been the subject of much control as to the formation of cancer cells are (EDCs) endocrine disrupting chemicals. Although no conclusive evidence has come to light, understand more about these chemicals help you make informed decisions.

What is the endocrine system?

The main function of the endocrine system is communication. Through production in the glands and the release of various hormones, the endocrine system regulates almost all biological processes in the human body: physical growth and development, mental development, mood and memory, sexual development and immune function. When hormones are not working properly, these processes can be adversely affected.

What are endocrine disruptors and where they are located?

Chemical synthetic endocrine-disrupting, or endocrine disruptors, are chemical compounds in preservation and plasticizers products. Found in cleaning and daily personal care, endocrine products handle the normal function of a hormone. Certain types of endocrine disruptors, such as parabens and phthalates, mimic estrogen when absorbed into the body and have been linked to the development of breast cancer.

Endocrine disruptors are found in many household products, in food and in their packaging. To name a few, endocrine disrupting substances can be produced in plastics (especially those containing bisphenol A, or BPA and phthalates), pesticides, metals, and perfumes in cosmetics and cleaning. Paradoxically, lower amounts of endocrine disrupting chemicals are more readily absorbed in the system, while the largest quantities can overwhelm the endocrine system, which allows limited absorption and having little to no effect on the system. To date, safety testing of chemicals assumed that low doses are not harmful if higher doses showed no effects, and most ESPS have not been thoroughly tested for effects on health at low exposures. Precisely for this reason - they contain small amounts of endocrine disruptors, exposure to certain pesticides, cleaning products and plastics, are more relative.

Endocrine and breast cancer: what is the link?

According to the Environmental Protection Agency:

Increases in the incidence of certain cancers (breast, testes, prostate) can also be linked to the disruption of the endocrine system. Because the endocrine system plays an essential role in normal growth, development and reproduction, even small disorders of endocrine function can have profound and lasting effects... The severity of the endocrine disruptor hypothesis and the many scientific uncertainties associated with the issue are sufficient to justify a coordinated federal research effort.

While more research needs to be done, studies have increasingly to exposure to endocrine disrupters as a factor in the formation of cancer cells.

To a large extent, the risk of exposure of chemicals disrupting system endocrine is not clear; However, caution is recommended, especially for women. Endocrine disruptors seem to have the greatest effect on women in the uterus, during puberty and in the perinatal phase (the last trimester of pregnancy until after one to four weeks delivery), because it is a period of great change for development, in particular in the mammary glands. While other risk factors play an important role in the development of breast cancer, environmental factors can no longer be ignored.

How to avoid exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals

The best way to maintain the limitation of exposure to endocrine disrupters is by educating yourself on what to look for in food and products.

Buy organic as much as possible, because pesticides have been associated with the development of cancer cells.Look for the Green cleaning products, or make your own at home. Simple ingredients, you have in your pantry can be just as effective as those that that would be in the store. When purchasing cleaning products, do your homework! Check for the (rating) worksheet on the manufacturer's Web site - this document provides full disclosure of all ingredients, and lists the names of International Nomenclature Cosmetic ingredients (INCI), a dictionary in the world which accurately identifies the composition of ingredients in personal care products.Ensure the conservation of food. Use glass containers whenever possible and during the use of plastics, stick to 1 PET (polyethylene terephthalate), which does not seep into the products and does contain no BPA. A good rule of thumb is not to reheat food in a plastic container, because the heat can release chemical substances which then seep into the food. The object of one of the environmental causes of cancer and the potential of the breast is heavy, but armed with knowledge, you can make informed decisions to prevent endocrine disrupters and keep you and your family safe.
